Visiting Coordinator of AEMS

The Asian Educational Media Service (AEMS), an educational outreach program based at the University of Illinois, seeks a Coordinator who will lead the service in its mission to promote Asian studies through the use of audiovisual media. The position offers a full-time, 12-month, one-year, non-tenure track appointment as a visiting academic professional in the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (EAPS), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There is the possibility of making the position permanent, pending sufficient funding.

AEMS maintains a comprehensive website of Asia-related educational resources with a searchable online database of about 6000 media titles. The program produces and distributes a variety of publications for K-16 educators seeking audiovisual materials for use in teaching and learning about Asia, including AEMS News and Reviews , a publication for educators devoted to reviews of new media and pedagogical essays on teaching about Asia with film. AEMS staff members make presentations at professional conferences, host teacher workshops, and respond to reference inquiries concerning Asia and film. Locally, AEMS runs a media lending library which belongs to the Lincoln Trails Library System, and hosts film screenings, including the annual Asian Film Festival and a documentary film series at the Spurlock Museum, AsiaLENS. A new and growing project is the Digital Asia Documentary Video Workshop, which trains academic scholars in media production.

Duties:

• Supervise a small staff and manage the team's activities to achieve program goals;
• Proactively pursue sources of funding and write grants to support AEMS operations and programming;
• Procure and evaluate new media materials for review or screening;
• Edit AEMS News and Reviews (published online three times a year) and AEMS website content;
• Supervise work on the AEMS online database and media library;
• Organize and coordinate the Digital Asia Workshop, including the competitive application process;
• Organize and coordinate local events programming, including the annual Asian Film Festival, the AsiaLENS film series, and two to three educator workshops per year.
• Promote the program and its services at conferences and professional meetings, through presentations and exhibits;
• Manage the AEMS budget;
• Prepare annual report and other reports to funding agencies as required; and
• Work cooperatively with other EAPS staff to promote the overall mission of EAPS

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• MA in Asian Studies or other field with Asia-related emphasis;
• Demonstrated interest in film and video;
• Excellent writing and editing skills;
• Grant-writing and/or fundraising experience;
• Experience working collaboratively with diverse kinds of professionals, especially in academia;
• Experience in teaching and/or working with K-12 teachers;
• Strong interpersonal communication skills;
• Excellent research skills, with creative thinking and demonstrated problem-solving ability;
• Experience managing a program budget;
• Sufficient technical knowledge to be comfortable working in an all-electronic environment;
• General understanding of digital media technologies; and
• Demonstrated leadership ability, with strong organizational skills.

Desired Qualifications

• Ph.D. or doctoral work
• Library experience
• Knowledge of one or more Asian languages
• Experience in media production
• Experience in web design and/or online publishing

• Maintain the AEMS film database;
• Handle reference queries by email, by phone and in person;
• Manage circulation for the lending library, using the Lincoln Trails Library system;
• Maintain the physical collection and space of the lending library;
• Catalogue new items for the lending library;
• Maintain AEMS media library patron records;
• Stay abreast of new media and resources for teaching about Asia;
• Assist other AEMS staff in procuring and evaluating new media materials for review or screening;
• Assist the Coordinator of AEMS in editing AEMS News and Reviews ;
• Assist the Coordinator in writing grants and otherwise pursuing funding;
• Maintain AEMS mailing lists and email listservs;
• Promote AEMS services at conferences and workshops, through presentations and exhibits;
• Assist with AEMS workshops, film screenings and other events, as needed; and
• Work cooperatively with other EAPS staff to promote the overall mission of EAPS.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

• Master of Library Science (MLS) degree;
• At least one year of work experience in a library environment;
• Experience working with databases;
• Demonstrated interest in film and/or digital media;
• Demonstrated interest in Asia;
• Experience working collaboratively with diverse kinds of professionals;
• Sufficient technical knowledge to be comfortable working in an all-electronic environment;
• Basic web design skills, or willingness to learn immediately;
• Strong writing and communication skills, in English;
• Excellent research skills, with creative thinking and demonstrated problem-solving ability;
• Ability to work independently and take initiative; and
• Strong organizational skills.

Desired Qualifications:

• Academic background in some area of Asian Studies;
• Knowledge of one or more Asian languages;
• Experience running or helping to run a small library;
• Experience with educational outreach; and
• Experience in teaching and/or working with K-12 teachers.
